Senate Dear Colleague Letter on Pell Grants
Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) is circulating the attached Dear Colleague letter seeking the maximum Pell Grant award of $5,550 in FY2012. Please contact your Senators and encourage them to sign on to this letter. The deadline for sign-ons is June 7, 2011.
Upcoming Congressional Recesses
The Senate will be in recess Monday, May 30 through Friday, June 3. The House will be in recess Monday, June 6 through Friday June 10. AASCU encourages its members to invite their Members of Congress to campus during these recess weeks. These visits are ideal times to showcase important federal dollars at work on your campuses.
Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA or No Child Left Behind) Reauthorization
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, introduced H.R. 1891 last Friday. This bill is the first in a series of K-12 education reform bills that we expect to come out of this committee. The legislative language is not yet available, but a summary can be found here. In short, this bill eliminates a number of K-12 programs that have been defunded in the recent appropriations bills, set for consolidation by the Obama Administration in the FY11 and FY12 budgets, deemed duplicative or ineffective, or have never been funded.
AASCU will continue to keep you updated on ESEA reauthorization discussions.
